Ocean Life Survey offers a range of survey and monitoring options to our clients, including:
Vessel-Based Operations
Ocean Life Survey can plan and deliver a range of vessel based operations, including transect, line transit, sector, and opportunistic surveys, whether for marine mammal (including photo ID; DNA capture; tagging) and seabird observer surveys; nocturnal thermal marine mammal and seabird surveys; marine debris; vertebrate species (including fish/shark/turtle); invertebrate species (including squid/jellyfish), plankton surveys/trawls; sonar imaging; magnetometer; salinity/temperature, ice-cover; acidity; together with vessel based UROV operations; AROV operations, and acoustic surveys.
We have proven experience of delivering successful small boat based coastal survey and larger ship based open ocean surveys, for International NGO's, National Governments, Universities, and Marine Industry, within the North Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans, the North, Celtic and Tasman Seas, the Hauraki Gulf, and the Antarctic pack ice.
Underwater Operations
Ocean Life Survey can provide underwater operations, including UROV provision, operational planning and piloting, for search, survey, and sampling within river, lake and marine environments, whether over track, quadrat, water column, or bed surveys. We can also provide diving & snorkel operations for a variety of searches and surveys. As well as UROV and diver snorkel operations, we can further provide: drop/drifting underwater video survey (baited/un-baited); static bed camera surveys; water column surveys and sampling (e.g. Phyto/Zoo plankton, organism; plastics, suspended sediment sampling); bed sediment and organism sampling; depth temperature and light measurement; acoustic surveys; sonar searches surveys; and magnetometer surveys.
Ocean Life Survey's in house expertise, includes our principle research officer Martin Stanley, who has delivered and piloted a number of successful commercial UROV surveys for UK government agency (providing corresponding reports), and has also delivered for Ocean Life Survey a series of UROV operations, dives, tests (and corresponding reports) for an international UROV manufacturer (see UROV operations page for further information).
Ocean Life Survey and Martin Stanley have also successfully planned and delivered: dive and snorkel searches and surveys, drifting and drop camera searches and surveys, and water, organism, and sediment sampling operations for New Zealand and UK government agencies; acoustic, sonar, plankton, towed underwater surveys and sampling operations for international NGO's; and magnetometer surveys for a UK government agency.
Aerial Operations
Ocean Life Survey can provide aerial operations, including UAV provision, operational planning, and pilot to deliver UAV searches and surveys to 4km range (HD and Thermal Imaging). We can also deliver aircraft observer surveys (HD & Thermal Imaging). We have experience of previous successful delivery of marine megafauna (marine mammals, turtles, sharks, sunfish etc..), seabirds, turbidity, plankton, and ice cover surveys, and compliance operations.
Ocean Life Survey and Martin Stanley have successfully planned, tested and delivered UAV diurnal and nocturnal (with thermal imaging) coastal survey flights for international NGO's and government agency, and planned and delivered aerial observer manned fixed wing and helicopter estuarine, marine and ice survey flights for government agency, marine industry, and international NGO's, over estuary, coastal, offshore, open ocean, and pack ice environments (operating from land airports and ship helipads).
Land-Based Operations
Ocean Life Survey can deliver land-based aquatic searches and surveys, including observer, HD video, thermal imaging surveys of river, lake, coastal, coastal, island, and ice environments, whether for marine/freshwater mammals, seabirds/waterbirds, or for other marine/freshwater megafauna. We also provide land based water sampling services, sediment monitoring (e.g. using land accessed sediment traps), shoreline searches and surveys (for instance for habitat and species), marine/estuarine/freshwater vertebrate and invertebrate surveys, whether within water, pool, sediment or on non tidal shore line, or within an intertidal zone. We are also able to deliver land based UROV and UAV deployment, searches and surveys.
Ocean Life Survey and Martin Stanley have successfully delivered such land-based marine and freshwater searches, surveys and monitoring for New Zealand and UK Government Agencies, Marine Industry, and international NGO's.
Thermal Imaging - Searches, Surveys, and Monitoring
Ocean Life Survey can deliver land-based, vessel based, aerial (UAV and aircraft) based thermal imaging surveys/operations for both daylight and nighttime conditions. We have previously delivered successful marine mammal, and seabird surveys, and have capabilities to deliver water temperatures surveys and compliance monitoring. We can provide the thermal imaging systems, operator and expertise required for such operations.
Ocean Life Survey and Martin Stanley have successfully developed, tested and delivered land-based, vessel based, and aerial thermal imaging for marine and estuarine mammal and bird species, undertaking searches, surveys, and monitoring for Marine Industry, and international NGO's
Remote Sensing - Searches, Surveys and Monitoring
Ocean Life Survey has the capacity to deliver remote sensing monitoring, operations and surveys, using satellite, GIS, and other systems, for marine mammal, seabird, marine megafauna, plankton, and ice cover surveys, as well as for oceanographic and meteorological monitoring, and commercial vessel monitoring and compliance.
Ocean Life Survey and Martin Stanley have successfully delivered remote sensing and monitoring operations for government agency, marine industry, and international NGO's, including species and vessel presence and movement, and environmental conditions.
